The City of Rockford announced on Apr. 30 that several major public works projects are progressing throughout the city as construction season begins.

These infrastructure improvements are expected to impact traffic in various neighborhoods and aim to enhance road safety, utilities, and community spaces. Residents are advised to be aware of lane closures and detours as work continues into the summer months.

Work on the 11th Street project between Harrison Avenue and Broadway Street is ongoing, with daily lane closures from Harrison to 22nd Avenue for grading, sidewalk installation, and new lighting. Water service replacements between Broadway and 18th Avenue have been completed, while local traffic can access the north end (18th to Broadway). ComEd crews remain present with flaggers assisting traffic. The section from 21st to 18th Avenue is closed, with posted detours available for drivers. Crosswalk signals near Harrison Avenue by Collins Aerospace are being replaced, using temporary signage; schedules may shift depending on weather conditions.

Davis Park remains closed as construction continues on a major improvement project scheduled for completion this summer. On Newburg Road between South Alpine Road and South Mulford Road, resurfacing began March 30 with outside lanes in both directions currently closed; drivers should expect delays or consider alternate routes.

Auburn Street is also under construction between Central Avenue and Main Street due to watermain installation in the eastbound outside lane. This work will continue through Friday, May 29. Motorists should anticipate delays during this period.

Reconstruction of Mason Avenue from the IL-251 frontage road to its eastern dead end will begin during the week of May 4 with equipment mobilization and vegetation removal. Major pavement removal and primary construction tasks will start May 11, aiming for project completion by June 30.

“We appreciate your patience as we make these important infrastructure improvements to keep our city moving forward,” said city officials.
