Indiana lawmakers have advanced legislation to support a new stadium project in hopes of attracting the Chicago Bears, putting pressure on Illinois officials as discussions continue in Springfield. The situation has drawn criticism from Senate Republicans, who argue that Governor JB Pritzker’s policies are making it harder for businesses and families to remain in Illinois.

Senator Dave Syverson commented on the issue, stating, “For years, under Governor Pritzker’s anti-growth policies, it’s become increasingly difficult for businesses and families to survive in Illinois. Rather than creating a competitive environment that encourages employers to keep their business here, Democrats have continued to make Illinois harder to afford and harder to operate in.”

Syverson further remarked, “It should come as no surprise that the Bears are now exploring opportunities elsewhere. Despite Illinois’ many advantages, including its workforce, central location, infrastructure, and natural resources, the governor once again finds himself trying to keep a major institution from leaving the state after years of inaction.” He added that if earlier action had been taken by the administration, there would not be such urgency now that Indiana is actively pursuing the team.

The Chicago Bears are considering relocating due in part to what critics describe as Illinois’ heavy tax burden. While Indiana has moved forward with legislation aimed at luring the team across state lines, Illinois lawmakers have started legislative efforts and hearings focused on keeping the Bears within the state. However, it remains uncertain what decision will ultimately be made.

If the Bears choose to move to Indiana, Governor Pritzker may face scrutiny over his administration’s response and questions about why more was not done sooner to prevent another major business departure.

Syverson has represented Illinois’ 35th Senate District since 1993 after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
