A group of Illinois lawmakers from both parties recently introduced a set of bills at the State Capitol intended to address energy affordability and reliability as the state increases its use of electricity.

The legislators highlighted that Illinois is experiencing higher energy costs and concerns about the stability of its power grid. They referenced a recent state study on resource adequacy, which indicated that if infrastructure decisions are not managed carefully, the state could face tighter capacity margins and potential reliability issues in the coming years.

The proposed legislative package aims to preserve Illinois’ current energy infrastructure, avoid unnecessary financial burdens for families and small businesses, and shield vulnerable or low-income residents from increased utility bills.

The package includes several measures:

– Senate Bill 3970 and Senate Bill 3979 would require detailed studies and reviews of how customer bills would be affected before any large-scale gas transition projects receive approval.
– Senate Bill 3929 proposes extending by ten years the closure dates for power plants set by the Clean Energy Jobs Act (CEJA).
– Senate Bill 4028 seeks to update interconnection rules that lawmakers say cause project delays and inconsistent upgrade costs.

State Senator Dave Syverson commented on the importance of natural gas in maintaining reliable power in Illinois. “Natural gas continues to play a critical role in Illinois’ energy system by providing reliable, on-demand power that stabilizes the grid during peak demand and extreme weather conditions,” Syverson said. He added, “He believes that this bipartisan package seeks to promote balanced energy policy grounded in affordability, infrastructure readiness, and long-term grid stability.”

Syverson has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since 1993, representing the state’s 35th Senate District after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
