Illinois ranked 45th in the nation for entrepreneurship and economic growth, according to a study released on April 7. The report highlights concerns raised by Senate Republicans about the state’s high taxes, regulations, and policies that they say make it difficult for families and businesses to thrive.
The ranking is part of a broader analysis of social mobility, which looks at how people can improve their quality of life and economic well-being. Illinois placed 38th overall in social mobility, but its low score for entrepreneurship and growth is notable. All neighboring states ranked higher than Illinois in this category.
Senator David L. Syverson said that policies supported by Governor Pritzker and his allies have made Illinois less affordable and competitive. “Until Illinois changes course and supports policies that encourage growth, affordability, and opportunity, businesses will continue to struggle, and Illinois will continue to see a mass exodus of jobs and residents to other states,” Syverson said.
Syverson has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State Senate since his election in 1993 representing the state’s 35th Senate District; he succeeded Christine J. Johnson according to available records.
The findings raise questions about what steps state leaders may take next to address these issues.
