CITY OF ROCKFORD: Mayor's Hunger Luncheon

Businessluncheon

City of Rockford issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

More than 10 years after it was last held, the Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon will return on Tuesday, October 16, from 11:30 to 1 p.m. at Cliffbreakers Riverside Conference Center. The event will raise awareness of hunger issues in the region and highlight organizations working to help alleviate the problem.

A simple meal of soup, bread and salad will be served. Tickets are $30 per person and net proceeds will benefit Roots & Wings, a youth leadership and urban agriculture program led by Angelic Organics Learning Center, in partnership with Zion Outreach, the Rockford Housing Authority and residents of Blackhawk Courts. The programs engage youth and adults in farm-to-table activities to provide healthy food options in our community.

Mayor Tom McNamara will deliver the keynote address, touching on food insecurity and what agencies are doing to address some of the region’s hunger-related issues. The Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon was originally begun by then-Rockford Mayor John McNamara and continued as a fundraiser for Hunger Connection well into the late 1990s. The local chapter of Bread for the World worked to revive this year's event.
