ROCKFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT: Suspect Caught After Fleeing

Rockford Police Department issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.

On Friday, September 14, 2018 shortly after 12:30 a.m., Rockford Police SCOPE officers stopped two, suspicious male subjects walking in the 700 block of Ashland. During the stop, one of the men ran off, and the other, 25-year-old Joshua Thomas, was taken into custody. During a perimeter search, officers located two handguns before finding the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jose Becerra-Tapia, in the 1000 block of North Winnebago Street. Officers also found a knife on Becerra-Tapia.

Upon further review, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the below listed charges against Becerra-Tapia.

Jose Becerra-Tapia, 38, Beloit: Armed Habitual Criminal, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Street Gang Member, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Resisting a Peace Officer

Thomas was issued several citations. Becerra-Tapia was lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. The charges against Becerra-Tapia are merely accusations. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
