SWEDISHAMERICAN HOSPITAL: Fall Flu Shot Season

Vaccination

SwedishAmerican Hospital issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.

With pumpkins and changing leaves comes something that’s not so welcome: Flu season.

Indeed, it’s that time again when you begin to get reminders about flu shots. Why? Because it’s the best possible way to protect yourself from the flu. It might not be perfect – sometimes the strain we immunize against isn’t the one you come in contact with – but it’s certainly your best hope for staying healthy. That’s why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends getting vaccinated by the end of October each year.

Beyond that, there are a few other things experts say will increase your odds against catching the flu this year. Be proactive about preventing the spread of germs. Wash your hands, avoid close contact with sick people and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Clean and disinfect common surfaces around your house, office or school.

Finally, if you do get sick, be cautious about spreading your germs to others. The flu can be deadly in some cases – particularly for babies, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. So please, cover your sneeze and throw your tissues away. If your doctor prescribes you flu antiviral drugs, take them. Unlike an antibiotic, these medications can make illness milder, possibly preventing some of the serious complications that can come from the flu.
