Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Jan. 23.

The Mercyhealth Development Foundation is pleased to announce it is the recipient of $3,763 in proceeds from the Loves Park Police Department’s “No-Shave November” fundraising efforts. The impressive total was announced at a presentation before the Loves Park City Council at its meeting on the evening of Monday, January 14. The funds will be used to support the rooftop healing garden at Mercyhealth’s newly opened Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside.

The healing garden is a calming green space where patients and families can relax and escape the stress of illness or injury, and enjoy being close to nature outside a clinical setting. Foundation Director Jennifer Johns thanked Loves Park Police for its efforts to raise funds for the garden at the presentation.

“We are grateful to be receiving the No Shave November proceeds this year, and for the sense of well-being and healing it will bring to those we serve,” said Johns.

This is the second year the Loves Park Police Department has participated in the No Shave November tradition, a month-long journey during which participants forgo shaving and grooming in order to raise awareness of a charitable cause.

Loves Park Police Deputy Chief of Police Mike McCammond explained that each officer contributes $30 initially, and then solicits donations from family and friends throughout the month. Officers make T-shirts and compete in five categories ranging from ‘best-looking’ to ‘ugliest’ beards grown. Boosted by social media posts, more than 400 people voted for the top “People’s Choice Award” this year.

“We have a great relationship with Mercyhealth,” said McCammond. “Our collaboration has increased with the opening of the beautiful Riverside campus and we are pleased to show our support for patients and families who will benefit from the rooftop healing garden there.”
