MERCY ROCKFORD HEALTH SYSTEM: Mercyhealth Provides Highest Level Trauma Care to Rockford Patients

Emergency

Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Jan. 31.

When you, your family member, or a loved one suffers from a sudden injury or illness, you want the lifesaving resources of a state-of-the-art emergency/trauma center staffed by board certified emergency medicine doctors and trauma-trained surgeons. For adults and children who become critically injured or ill, Mercyhealth is the leader in emergency/trauma care throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

During the recent record-setting low temperatures this week in Rockford, the State-designated Emergency/Trauma Centers at Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside and Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Rockton saw an uptick of patients with weather-related injuries.

Motor vehicle accident victims related to the snow: 10

Patients slipping and falling on ice resulting in broken bones: 15

Patients with chest pain/shortness of breath after shoveling snow: 8

Cases of frostbite to extremities (especially fingers, toes and noses): 2

Cases of Carbon Monoxide poisoning due to furnace/dryer vents being blocked by the snow and people warming up cars for long periods of time in their closed garages: 4

*Data is from a two day period of Tuesday, January 29, and Wednesday, January 30.

Area residents receive convenient health care at both of our Rockford hospital and medical campuses–at Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Rockton, where we’re investing millions of dollars to renovate like never before, and Mercyhealth’s new Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside, which includes 24-hour, in-house coverage by general and trauma surgeons, and prompt availability of specialists and over 55 pediatric and critical care specialists.

“Both campuses are designated emergency/trauma centers and are staffed by the same board certified emergency/trauma physicians as well as highly trained nurses and other providers who offer leading-edge care for adults and children,” said Javon R. Bea, President and CEO at Mercyhealth. “Both campuses provide life-saving, compassionate care when every minute counts. And at both campuses, patients are treated like a member of our family.”

We are designated by the Illinois Department of Public Health as Trauma Centers, which means we provide the highest level of specialized trauma and critical care services at both of our hospitals using the same physicians and skill levels available to residents no matter where you live in Rockford.

“The combination of our two campuses-the Riverside and Rockton Campuses-is bringing the breadth and depth of specialty medical services in the Rockford region to an exciting new level,” said Bea.

REACT, our critical care transport helicopter, is staffed by highly skilled transport nurses. We also have the region’s only critical care and pediatric intensive care units staffed by specially-trained critical care and pediatric intensivists.
