WINNEBAGO COUNTY: Stephen Grimes Indictment

Courtgavel0321

Winnebago County issued the following announcement on June 13.

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross announces that a Grand Jury has returned an indictment against a Rockford man who sexually assaulted a child.

On May 25th, 2019, Rockford Police Detectives responded to a Rockford medical office, after medical staff reported a possible sexual assault of a child. Detectives met with staff, who indicated a patient had been sexually assaulted and medical testing came back showing that the child tested positive for HIV. Detectives conducted a follow up investigation and the defendant, Stephen G. Grimes (D.O.B. 6/14/1987) was developed as the suspect. The investigation was reviewed by Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, Grimes was charged and recently indicted on multiple counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault, Criminal Sexual Assault and Criminal Transmission of HIV charges. The charges allege the sexual assaults began as far back as 2005, when the victim was under the age of 13.

Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault is a Class X Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. The defendant is eligible for an extended term of 6-60 years in the Department of Corrections because the victim was under the age of 13 at the time of the alleged offense.

Criminal Sexual Assault is a Class 1 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by two years up to natural life of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Criminal Transmission of HIV is a Class 2 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 3-7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by two years of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Grimes is currently in custody at the Winnebago County Jail on $1 million bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment at 9am on July 12th, 2019, in front of the Honorable Judge John Lowry in Courtroom B at the Winnebago County Justice Center.

The charges are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
