Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Aug. 14.
Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside is pleased to announce it has received certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, which is the highest level stroke certification achievable in the health care industry. The prestigious designation reflects the highest level of competence for treatment of patients who have experienced a serious stroke.
“This is one more example of how Mercyhealth continues to raise the bar for the health and well-being of our communities,” said Javon R. Bea, President/CEO at Mercyhealth. “Our Advanced Stroke Center team is always striving to do better, and this certification is a direct result of their passion for making lives better.”
This certification is based on standards set forth by the American Stroke Association and the Brain Attack Coalition, and affirms the hospital addresses the full spectrum of stroke care—diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education.
“It is an honor to be part of a team and program that provides the highest level of care for stroke patients,” said Dr. Shawn Wallery, Mercyhealth Medical Director, Neurovascular and Stroke. “As a physician, my number one goal is assuring patients are treated with the most advanced research proven methods. We have achieved this goal as Rockford’s most awarded comprehensive stroke center. I can’t be more proud and want to thank the many members of our team and administration that have made this happen.”
In addition, Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville and Javon Bea Hospital–Rockton in Rockford recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes both hospitals’ commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. Rockton also received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award and Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite award.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
Mercyhealth is the leader in stroke care in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The Comprehensive Stroke Center designation strengthens its existing certified stroke programs throughout the Mercyhealth network. By coordinating with certified physicians and nurses in their community, patients have access to the best and most appropriate care, advanced diagnostics, the newest treatments, and many recovery and rehabilitation options.
