State Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) is supporting a reversal of license plate fee increase on the smallest class of trailers, according to a recent post on his website.
Before June, the annual registration fee was $18 for trailers that carry 3,000 pounds or less. The 2020 fiscal capital plan raised trailer fees $100 to $118.
The Keicher-backed legislation would return the fee to $18 for the smallest class of trailers, which can transport items such as lawnmowers.
The bipartisan-backed legislation is scheduled for a Revenue and Finance Committee hearing.
“The fee hike on trailer license plates was one provision of the capital bill I was not in favor of as we were called to consider a comprehensive package at the end of [the] session in 2019,” Keicher said in a statement.
The Sycamore representative said he supported the 2020 capital plan that had economic incentives to create jobs, fix roads, and help farmers among other areas. However, he said rolling back the small trailer fee increase was important.
“One of the most important to me was to reverse the fee hike on low-weight standard trailers, as well as adjust the $10,000 vehicle trade-in cap,” he said. “We can address both of these issues on a bipartisan basis to protect taxpayers.”
