SwedishAmerican Hospital issued the following announcement on June 4.
Due to the health risks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and per the guidelines from the Winnebago County Health Department and state and local governments, the 2020 SwedishAmerican State Street Mile has been canceled.
The State Street Mile would have celebrated its 36th year this summer. The mile-long race is held every August in downtown Rockford and brings families and individuals of all ages together for fun and fitness. The race also gives away $2,250 annually to local schools participating in the event.
“We are disappointed to have to cancel ‘The Fastest Mile in the Midwest’ this year, but the health and safety of our community members is our top priority,” race director Rick Durso said. “The committee would like to thank SwedishAmerican for their generous support over the years, and we look forward to working with them for the 2021 State Street Mile. Thank you to Runner’s Image and A&B Machine Shop for their continued support. We will begin working on next year’s race now to ensure that we continue to provide a healthy and fun event for our community.”
