SwedishAmerican Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.
SwedishAmerican associates celebrated 815 Day this year by generously donating more than 2,000 face coverings to benefit local schools and students in need.
The health system held a Mask-To-School Drive from July 21-August 10. Employees from all areas of the hospital and clinics sent in hand-made and store-bought masks. SwedishAmerican far exceeded the system-wide goal of 815. The masks were donated to the Rockford Public Schools on 815 Day.
“SwedishAmerican has been humbled by the outpouring of support from the community ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began here in March,” said Luann Varilek, Nursing Resources Manager at SwedishAmerican. “Our frontline workers are so grateful, so we knew we wanted to organize a give-back for our community. Our ‘Mask-To-School Drive’ was a way to say ‘Thank you,’ to help our students and schools in need, and to reinforce our message that wearing masks will help protect against coronavirus.”
SwedishAmerican had two additional community give-backs that coincided with 815 Day this year. Riverwest Clinic donated 200 backpacks to students in the southwest neighborhood of Rockford, and a group of our nurses donated more than 815 food items to Rock House Kids this week after holding a drive during July and August.
