Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) says the police reform bill passed last month is a bad bill and he wants Gov. J.B. Pritzker to veto it.
“At three in the morning, Democrat lawmakers throw a 700-page bill on our desks and ask that we vote on a complex criminal reform proposal only an hour later,” Syverson said in a statement. “That’s not feasible and, more importantly, that is not how effective reform is passed.”
Syverson said the bill would put violent offenders back on the streets.
“House Bill 3653 might be a new bill number, but it’s the same bad bill that we opposed under House Bill 163,” Syverson said. “This proposal will put violent offenders back on the streets, puts an end to cash bail, endangers our residents and threatens the law enforcement profession in Illinois. It’s unbelievable.”
Syverson is not the only lawmaker who has spoken against the proposed bill. Sen. Craig Wilcox (R-McHenry) also aired the same sentiments. House Bill 3653 was approved by the Senate in a 32 to 23 vote. The legislation will go to the House for final considerations.
