U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) received the condemnation of fellow state Republicans for supporting the January impeachment proceedings against then-President Donald Trump.
The Republican was also sanctioned for stating that the November election was valid and congratulating President Joe Biden on his inauguration.
During its Jan. 19 Zoom meeting, the Illinois Republican county chairs for the southern region decided to condemn Kinzinger for the stances he has taken.
“Adding insult to the appalling injury already felt to the thousands of voters in Southern Illinois that supported President Trump and our beloved Constitution, Representative Kinzinger congratulates Joe Biden on his inauguration, just days after calling for President Donald Trump’s Impeachment,” the Republican county leaders said in a statement.
Kinzinger said in a statement that he felt Trump “encouraged an angry mob to storm the United States Capitol to stop the counting of electoral votes.”
The county chairs claim that Kinzinger’s statements regarding Trump are “baseless” and “do not reflect the beliefs of the Southern Regional chairmen nor largely those that we represent.”
The statement indicates that 36 Republican Party county chairs have joined in the condemnation.
