SWEDISHAMERICAN HOSPITAL: SwedishAmerican State Street Mile Canceled For Second Straight Year

Istock 000037773506 medium

SwedishAmerican Hospital issued the following announcement on May 6.

Due to the ongoing health risks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigations from the state government, the SwedishAmerican State Street Mile has been canceled for the second straight year.

The State Street Mile would have celebrated its 36th year last summer. For the previous 35 years, the mile-long race was held every summer in downtown Rockford, drawing around 600 runners and 1,000 people. The event brings families and individuals of all ages together for fun and fitness and also gives away $2,250 annually to local schools participating in the event.

“We are disappointed to have to cancel ‘The Fastest Mile in the Midwest’ again this year, but the health and safety of our community members is our top priority,” race director Rick Durso said. “We look forward to providing the community with the quality event that our city has been accustomed to for the previous 35 years. We want to thank our leading sponsor, SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, for supporting this event, and we look forward to 2022.”
