Women's Soccer Ready for Region IV Play

The Golden Eagles extended their record to 2-1 on the year against a past Region IV Division III rival Harper College. RVC stepped out to an early lead in the third minute during Wednesday's home match with #1 Isabella Garrelts driving at the Harper back line and slipping #5 Natalie Pacheco in for her first of three goals on the day. The second goal came from good movement on top of the box before #8 Kelly Munoz was brought down from behind. Last year's leading scorer and center back #24 Julia Theien stepped up to finish the free kick above the outstretched Harper Goalkeeper. Controlling much of the first half play #1 Isabella Garrelts was able to pick out #13 Stefanie Monsavais who finished neatly into the far corner.

Harper was able to find two goals against the run of play capitalizing on a couple defensive errors in a five minute period. The two goal lead was restored before halftime as freshman #12 Jamari Zawlocki played a ball into #5 Natalie Pacheco who spun the defender and found the top of the net for her second of the evening.

RVC started the second half quickly with #1 Isabella Garrelts beating a player out wide and crossing to her Rockford East High School teammate freshman #9 Olivia Gomez for her first collegiate goal. Harper continued to defend through the half and frustrated the Golden Eagles who finished with 28 shots 16 on goal. The final breakthrough came on #6 Liliveth Mendoza's fourth assist in three games as she played #5 Natalie Mendoza through for her third of the game and sixth of the season. Freshman Goalkeeper #0 Neema Tamang finished the game with 3 saves.

The Golden Eagles were supposed to take on Morraine Valley College for their first NJCAA Region IV game on Saturday September 3 but due to unforeseen weather that game has been postponed and now the Golden Eagles will open up NJCAA DII Region IV play against Black Hawk College who are 1-1 on the year with a win against Scott Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2pm in East Moline, IL at Jacobs's Park. "We are excited to get going with Region IV play. Coming off our win against Harper where we put up 6 goals hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow's match." Stated Coach Kevan Watkins
