Belvidere Community Unit School District 100 Board of Education met Sept. 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Community Unit School District #100, Boone, McHenry, DeKalb Counties, Illinois met in a regular meeting September 18, 2023, at 5:30 P.M. at the Districts Central Office, located at 1201 Fifth Avenue, Belvidere, Illinois, which is within the boundaries of said District.

A. Opening Items

Call to Order:

The President called the meeting to order at 5:34 P.M.

Roll Call:

Members present were Mrs. Brenner, Mr. Bucher, Mr. Herrera, Ms. Maville, Mrs. Whitcomb, and Mr. Zickert.

Member absent was Mrs. Houk.

B. Closed Executive Session of the Board of Education from Section 2 of the Open Meetings Act

The meeting adjourned to closed executive session at 5:31 P.M. for the following:

The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body – 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1).

Member Herrera made a motion and Member Maville seconded the motion to adjourn to closed executive session. The President called the question, and the following members voted.

YEA: Herrera, Maville, Bucher, Whitcomb, Zickert, and Brenner

NAY: None

ABSENT: Houk

Motion passed.

C. Reconvene in Open Session

Open session meeting reconvened at 6:02 P.M.

Roll Call:

Members present were Mrs. Brenner, Mr. Bucher, Mr. Herrera, Mrs. Maville, Mrs. Whitcomb, and Mr. Zickert.

Member absent was Mrs. Houk.

Approval of Agenda

President Brenner inquired if any Board member wished to amend or move any items on the agenda.

Hearing none, Member Maville made a motion and Member Herrera seconded the motion to approve the agenda of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education on September 18, 2023, as presented. The President called the question, and the following members voted:

YEA: Maville, Herrera, Whitcomb, Zickert, Bucher, and Brenner

NAY: None

ABSENT: Houk

Motion passed.

D. District Celebrations

1. Seth Whitman Elementary School HRS Level 4 Certification

Theresa Lozdoski, Principal, and Heather Novak, Assistant Principal were present as Dr. Carson present them with a HRS Level 4 Certification banner to proudly display at Seth Whitman Elementary School. Level 4 certification signifies the outstanding dedication of a schools team to fostering a culture of excellence in education.

2. Board Shout Out’s

The following people were nominated by their peers for going above and beyond in District 100.

• Karolina Raap – Belvidere High School

• Jen Diamond & Ron Anderson – Lincoln Elementary School

• Andy Werhane – Washington Academy

• Rob Wesselhoff – Belvidere High School

• Holly Fray – Lincoln Elementary School

• Emelita Riley – Belvidere High School

• Shannon Wiercinski – Belvidere High School

• James Hotchkiss – Everest High School

• Linda Weber – Belvidere North High School

Students from Belvidere North High came and presented a sneak peek of their upcoming performance of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.

3. Board Member Celebrations / Positive Highlights

Board Members recognized the following celebrations and/or positive district highlights.

• Member Maville – Tour at Caledonia Elementary School and Early Childhood and

• Member Herrera – Thank you to Mr. Zimmerman and the Belvidere North High School Students for their sneak peek of their upcoming play. Positive remarks from parents and visitors at the Belvidere North Football game for their professionalism and opening performance. And shout out from Rockford Sympathy Orchestra.

• Member Zickert – Thank you to parents and staff for being patient during the start of the school year.

• Member Brenner – Acknowledgment of our latest POSSIP results.

E. Student Council Reports

Addison Walker from Belvidere High School reported on what has been happening at Meehan Elementary, Washington Academy, and Belvidere High School.

Riya Amin from North High School reported on what has been happening at Caledonia, Perry and Seth Whitman Elementary Schools, along with Central Middle School and Belvidere North High School.

F. Hearing of Visitors

Members of the public and employees of District #100 were able to make comments or ask questions of the Board. The following people wished to address the board:

• Misty Coryell regarding policy change on Grading and Promotion

Hearing no one else wished to address the Board, President Brenner closed the hearing of visitors.

Member Maville made a motion and Member Herrera seconded the motion to approve Consent Agenda Items #2, and 4-8 and 10-20, as presented.

President Brenner recognized the following donation:

• 60 Headphones for Belvidere South Middle School, 100 Headphones for Lincoln and Meehan Elementary School and Washington Academy from First United Methodist Church

• 800 Granola Bars for Washington Academy from General Mills

• $1000 for Belvidere Coop Girls Swim Team from Belvidere Cosmopolitan Charities Inc

The President called the question, and the following members voted:

Member Herrera made a motion and Member Maville seconded the motion to approve the 2023-2024 Administrative Contract for 11-Month Administrator at Belvidere North High School, John Rossato, as presented. The President called the question, and the following members voted:

NAY: None

3. Social Media Litigation

Member Herrera made a motion and Member Bucher seconded the motion to participate in a mass action litigation case against giant social media companies for the negative impacts they are having on students and school districts throughout Illinois, as presented. The President called the question, and the following members voted:

YEA: Herrera, Bucher, Whitcomb, Zickert, Maville, and Brenner

NAY: None

ABSENT: Houk

4. 2023-2024 School District Scorecard

Member Maville made a motion and Member Herrera seconded the motion to approve the 2023-2024 School District Scorecard, as presented. The President called the question, and the following members voted:
