The Illinois Veterans History Project, a collaboration between the Library of Congress and the Illinois Secretary of State's office, is appealing to Illinoisans to contribute to its mission of honoring and preserving the stories of military veterans. By submitting their personal accounts, photographs, and memorabilia, Illinois veterans and their families can ensure that their experiences are not forgotten.

To participate in the Illinois Veterans History Project, individuals are encouraged to visit the website www.idaillinois.org. This online platform serves as a repository for the collection, preservation, and accessibility of firsthand recollections from veterans who have served in the five branches of the military. With the ability to search submissions by name, war, and hometown, the collection has already amassed over 6,700 records.

To make a submission, interested individuals can visit www.ilsos.gov/veteranshistoryproject. Here, they will find an Illinois Patriot Information Form that needs to be completed and submitted to the Illinois State Library. Submissions can be made electronically by emailing the form to ilvhp@ilsos.gov or by mailing it to the Illinois State Library at 300 S. Second St., Springfield, IL 62701−1796.

The Illinois Veterans History Project serves as a significant endeavor to ensure that the sacrifices and contributions of Illinois veterans are preserved for future generations. By sharing their stories, veterans can provide a firsthand account of their service, allowing others to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their experiences.

In an official statement, the Illinois Secretary of State's office emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "We owe it to our veterans to ensure that their stories are heard and remembered. The Illinois Veterans History Project provides a platform for veterans and their families to share their unique accounts, ensuring that their legacies live on."

Illinoisans are urged to take part in this meaningful initiative by submitting their stories and materials to the Illinois Veterans History Project. By doing so, they play a vital role in preserving the rich tapestry of Illinois's military history and honoring the brave men and women who have served our country.
