FOIA Request to South Beloit City Council Regarding Council Members' Details on October 15, 2024. The request was made by Rockford Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we at Rockford Sun requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we asked for a list of all council members with specific fields including their names, titles, years appointed, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates.
As journalists committed to delivering quality news to the public, access to such public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the benefit of the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe that as media professionals we are eligible for a fee waiver.
