As Illinois faces a projected budget deficit exceeding $3 billion, Senate Republicans are urging Governor J.B. Pritzker to balance the state's budget without increasing taxes on residents and businesses. The Governor's Office of Management and Budget recently reported a $3.16 billion shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year, raising questions about how this gap will be addressed.

Governor Pritzker has increased state spending by over 30% since taking office, reaching a record $53 billion in the last fiscal year. This increase has been criticized by Senate Republicans who argue that temporary federal aid has been turned into long-term financial commitments.

This deficit news follows tax increases of nearly $1 billion to fund a budget that included over $1 billion in benefits for non-citizens. A Chicago Tribune article noted GOP senators' demand for no new tax hikes: "With state facing $3B deficit, GOP senators call on Gov. JB Pritzker to promise no tax hikes."

State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Cherry Valley) highlighted that Illinoisans are struggling financially and cannot bear additional costs from the budget crisis. He emphasized that the Governor should focus on real challenges facing families and work towards financial stability.

In another development, a federal judge in East St. Louis ruled Illinois' assault weapons ban unconstitutional. The ban, enacted in 2023, faced legal challenges from gun owners and advocacy groups who argued it infringed on constitutional rights. Judge Stephen P. McGlynn granted an injunction against the ban but stayed it for 30 days as Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed an appeal.

Senator Syverson expressed hope that efforts would shift towards addressing violence's root causes with stricter enforcement against illegal gun possession and improved mental health support.

Additionally, the Veterans Memorial Display has returned to the Illinois State Capitol, open from November 11 through November 25. Hosted by the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus, this annual tribute honors veterans with photos and stories displayed alongside a message wall for visitor notes of gratitude.

The public can also view these tributes online.
