The City of Rockford and the Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) have announced a new initiative aimed at easing transportation costs for students. Starting February 1, 2025, individuals enrolled in local post-secondary education programs or adult General Educational Development (GED)/High School Equivalency (HSE) programs will be eligible for free rides on RMTD’s fixed route service.
To participate, students must present a valid student photo ID from the spring 2025 semester. This offer is available to those attending institutions such as Rock Valley College, Rockford Career College, Rockford University, NIU Rockford, Judson University, Rasmussen University, U of I College of Medicine, and OSF Nursing.
Additionally, RMTD will collaborate with organizations offering GED/HSE programs—such as Rock Valley College, Rockford Public Schools & Goodwill, and the Rockford Public Library Adult Online High School—to distribute free passes to their participants.
These free ride programs aim to reduce barriers to accessing educational opportunities within the community. A similar initiative was launched in 2022 for veterans and K-12 students using the fixed route system.
