Applications are now open for the 2025 Community Action Garden grants, provided by the City of Rockford Human Services Department, a Community Action Agency. The initiative encourages groups interested in growing fresh, affordable food to apply.

Eligible applicants include neighborhoods, schools, faith-based organizations, or other groups eager to learn gardening skills and willing to donate part of their produce to those in need. Organizations that integrate education, nutrition, or outreach programs targeting children, seniors, and veterans are also invited. Additionally, neighborhoods and groups aiming to boost community vitality or unity through gardening can apply.

The Community Action Gardens aim to help people grow fresh produce that might otherwise be inaccessible to low-income families and individuals. The gardens provide opportunities for learning about food sources and choosing items not locally available. They promote healthier lifestyles and foster community ownership and spirit.

Gardening offers a unique chance for people from diverse backgrounds to work together towards common goals. It reduces stress while enhancing wellness and belonging. Furthermore, it connects communities through educational and entrepreneurial projects. For those without land of their own, it provides an opportunity to grow food.

Gardens should be located on faith-based or community grounds; vacant neighborhood lots may also be used with prior contact with Cyndi McGovern. Private property is not permitted for these gardens.

Funding for the Community Action Gardens comes from the City of Rockford Department of Health and Human Services Department via Community Services Block Grant funds.
