State Representative John M. Cabello has put forward a bill aimed at providing property owners in Illinois with additional time to contest their tax assessments. The legislation, identified as HB1846, proposes extending the current 30-day appeal period to 60 days. This extension is intended to assist homeowners and businesses in challenging what they consider unfair tax assessments.
Rep. Cabello stated, "Illinois property taxes are out of control, and hardworking people are being forced out of their homes and businesses." He emphasized that the bill aims to offer taxpayers a fair opportunity to contest these assessments instead of being overwhelmed by the system.
The existing law allows property owners only 30 days for appeals, which many find difficult to manage within such a limited timeframe. By doubling this period, Cabello's proposal seeks to provide families and businesses adequate time to collect necessary documentation and contest excessive taxes.
"Property taxes in Illinois are already some of the highest in the country," Rep. Cabello remarked. "As a lawmaker, it is my responsibility to find ways we can give people more time to push back against bad assessments instead of forcing them to pay more than their fair share."
The bill is currently under review by the 104th General Assembly. For further information or questions, individuals can contact Representative Cabello directly.
John M. Cabello serves as the Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative for Illinois’ 90th House District, covering areas within Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties.
