State Representative John M. Cabello from Machesney Park has introduced two legislative bills aimed at restoring gun rights in Illinois. The proposed legislation includes the "Void the FOID" bill (HB1067) and a repeal of the "Protect Illinois Communities Act" (PICA), also known as the assault weapons ban, through HB1040.
Rep. Cabello stated, “For too long, Illinois lawmakers have targeted law-abiding gun owners instead of criminals. My bills will restore our Second Amendment rights, repeal unconstitutional gun bans, and put an end to bureaucratic overreach that punishes responsible citizens.”
The "Void the FOID" bill seeks to eliminate the Firearm Owner’s Identification card requirement in Illinois, a measure Cabello argues is an unnecessary hurdle for residents exercising their constitutional right to bear arms. He has consistently refiled this proposal in each term since its initial introduction.
The second piece of legislation targets the PICA law, which Rep. Cabello describes as a restriction on commonly owned firearms that criminalizes lawful gun owners. He believes repealing this law would restore residents' rights to choose their firearms freely.
“These gun control laws do nothing to stop criminals or to make our communities safer—they only strip rights from responsible gun owners,” Cabello added. “I believe in the Constitution, so I believe in the right to keep and bear arms. I won’t allow radical politicians to try and take that away.”
Both pieces of legislation are currently under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
John M. Cabello serves as Assistant Minority Leader and represents Illinois’ 90th House District, covering areas such as Rockford, Machesney Park, Freeport, Roscoe, Loves Park, Rockton, South Beloit, Caledonia, Durand, Rock City, and Rockton within Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties.
