State Representative John M. Cabello has filed a bill, HB1029, aimed at repealing the TRUST Act in Illinois. This legislation would terminate the state's sanctuary status and permit local law enforcement to collaborate with federal immigration officials. The proposal intends to allow police to detain and aid in deporting illegal immigrants who violate laws.

Rep. Cabello stated, "We cannot continue to allow Illinois to be a safe haven for illegal immigrants while law-abiding taxpayers foot the bill." He added that his bill aims to restore common sense by subjecting those who break the law and are in the country illegally to federal deportation efforts.

The TRUST Act, enacted during a previous administration, restricts local police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. According to Rep. Cabello, this policy has allowed dangerous criminals to evade deportation, increased taxpayer costs for social services, and reduced community safety. His proposed legislation seeks to reverse what he calls a reckless policy and prioritize the safety of Illinois residents.

"This is about restoring law and order, plain and simple," Cabello continued. "Legal immigration is welcome—lawlessness is not. If you break our laws, you shouldn’t be protected. Illinois families deserve better."

The bill is currently under review in the 104th General Assembly.
