Approve $10,000 for Crappie Fishing Series
Mayor Judy Smith said that she received an email on Friday containing a contract to sponsor the Crappie Fishing Series and King Kat to take place this weekend. Normally the city partners with the county and downstate Illinois but with such late notice it was not possible. The contract and email should have been sent in January because all the due dates were in February. Normally this would cost $10,000.00. By going through downstate Illinois with the 15% discount it knocks it down to $8,500.00 and it is split between the county and the city. Mayor Smith explained that she doesn’t have the county backing and there is no time to go to the county board before the event. They are going to drop it to $5,000.00 for the city and the city will provide two hotel rooms for the camera guys. They will do crappie fishing on Friday and King Kat will be on Saturday. The last tournament that was here was with a different group and it was several weeks ago and they did not have a good turnout. King Kat pulls a crowd. King Kat will also have the tournament for kids on Saturday. She is asking the committee for a motion to donate $5,000.00 from the hotel/motel tax fund and two hotel rooms. In June she will be going to the first county board meeting and explain to them how they bugged out on this tournament and how unfair it was to leave it all to the city. Alderman John Hodapp made a motion to take to the city council the donation of $5,000.00 plus two hotel rooms for the crappie tournament and the King Kat tournament. Alderman Jeff Taylor seconded the motion, and it was approved by voice vote. Alderman John Hodapp asked if there had been a crappie tournament earlier this year. Mayor Smith said the city sponsored a tournament earlier this year. They went around and made a video but most of the video was about businesses in the county outside of Carlyle. City Administrator Brad Myers told them the next time the videos will all be in Carlyle and they asked if he wanted to do some videos in town and City Administrator Brad Myers said he would. They went to Oh So Sweet, Pinball Palace, and Suds and Slot and did interviews with the owners. It will be on the You Tube channel at the end of the month.
