The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has opened a lottery for youth hunters to participate in a managed deer hunt this fall. The drawing is scheduled for August 26, 2025, and will determine which young hunters can take part in the youth firearm deer season from October 11 through October 13.
The event will take place at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area in Cass County and the Sangamon County State Conservation Area. Interested applicants must mail a postcard with their name, contact information, and preferred hunting site. Entries need to arrive at the JEPC office by close of business on August 25. Those selected will be notified and can purchase a youth either-sex deer permit from any Illinois hunting license vendor starting August 5.
Eligibility is limited to hunters under age 18 as of the start of the season. Only designated open units are available; restricted areas such as controlled and quail management units at JEPC are not included.
Participants must have a valid youth deer permit, along with either a youth or apprentice hunting license or proof of completing a certified hunter education course. Youth hunters using an apprentice or youth license must be accompanied by a non-hunting parent, guardian, or grandparent who holds a valid hunting license. All other participants must be supervised by a non-hunting adult with either a hunting license or FOID card.
Postcards should be addressed to: Youth Deer Hunt JEPC 10149 County Highway 11 Chandlerville, IL 62627. For further details, interested parties can call 217-452-7741.
Syverson has served as state senator for Illinois’ 35th Senate District since his election in 1993, following Christine J. Johnson.
