As the new school year begins, safety remains a primary concern for students and families. The National Safety Council has issued several recommendations aimed at protecting children as they return to classrooms.
Among the tips provided, parents are encouraged to teach their children bus safety by having them stand six feet from the curb and cross in front of the bus after making eye contact with the driver. Walking safety is also emphasized; children should use sidewalks when available, walk facing traffic if not, and avoid distractions such as texting or wearing headphones.
For those biking to school, riding on the right side of the road, stopping before crossing streets, and always wearing a properly fitted helmet are advised. Backpack safety is highlighted as well; backpacks should weigh no more than 5-10% of a child’s body weight, and both straps should be used to distribute weight evenly.
Drivers are reminded to obey school zone speed limits, never pass a stopped school bus, and stay alert for children and crossing guards.
The National Safety Council stated: "By following these simple safety guidelines, we can help ensure a safe and successful school year for all."
