The City of Rockford has completed the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and ComEd’s EV Readiness Program, a regional initiative aimed at preparing communities for electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
As part of this program, Rockford has adopted policies designed to streamline the process for residents and businesses to install EV charging stations. These measures are intended to support broader use of electric vehicles in the city.
Mayor McNamara stated, “The City of Rockford is honored to participate in the EV Readiness Program, which has played a vital role as we work to modernize our transportation system and ensure the benefits of clean mobility reach every neighborhood. This program helped us lay the groundwork for a more sustainable, inclusive future – one that supports economic opportunity, environmental stewardship and community well-being. We look forward to building on this momentum.”
Electric vehicles offer several advantages over conventional gasoline-powered cars. They convert a higher percentage of grid energy into power at the wheels, have no tailpipe emissions when operated—especially if charged with renewable energy—and can contribute to improved air quality. EVs also tend to have lower maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts and reduce dependence on imported fuels by using domestic electricity sources.
By completing the program, Rockford joins other Illinois communities working toward clean transportation goals. The city plans to continue efforts that expand access to EV infrastructure for all residents and businesses.
