Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was killed in a shooting at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Kirk, 31, was shot once as he prepared to speak to a group mainly composed of college students. On Friday, September 12, the FBI reported that a suspect had been detained.
The incident follows two recent assassination attempts against President Donald Trump.
State Senator Dave Syverson offered condolences to Kirk’s family and loved ones. He stated, "violence has no place in political discourse." Syverson further remarked that "to do anything other than condemn such violence and intolerance is unacceptable."
Syverson is a Republican who has served in the Illinois State Senate since 1993, representing the 35th Senate District after succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
