State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Cherry Valley) has issued a statement following the death of former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar. Syverson, who has served in the Illinois State Senate since 1993 representing the 35th District, reflected on his long relationship with Edgar and the governor’s legacy.

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of former Governor Jim Edgar. I’ve known him for more than 35 years and remember when he campaigned for me during my very first election.

The last time Illinois passed a fiscally responsible, balanced budget that did not rely on tax increases was under his leadership. It was a testament to his financial responsibility and his care for the people of this state.

In 1997, I took the lead in passing his welfare reform legislation alongside then–State Senator Barack Obama. That legislation provided job training and education while sunsetting welfare for able-bodied individuals. It was regarded as one of the most comprehensive and successful welfare reform measures in the nation. In less than four years, more than 50% of Illinois’ welfare population was able to move off government assistance and into private-sector jobs. I was proud to be part of such impactful and important legislation.

Unfortunately, years later, Democrats and Governor Quinn undermined the reforms, causing welfare rolls to rise once again.

When we look for model politicians, Jim Edgar embodied that ideal. He was a principled and honest leader, and even when people disagreed with him, they respected him. His legacy will continue to guide those of us who strive to lead with integrity.”

Syverson began serving in the Illinois State Senate after being elected in 1993 to represent the 35th Senate District, succeeding Christine J. Johnson.
