State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) and Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie are organizing a free paper shredding event in Freeport on October 11, 2025. The event will take place from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Highland Community College, located at 2998 West Pearl City Road, Parking Lot B.

Residents of the 89th and 90th House Districts are invited to bring paper documents for professional shredding and disposal. Organizers advise attendees to limit their items to two banker boxes per person, as the event will conclude once the shredding truck reaches capacity.

Leader McCombie stated, "I’m proud to offer this event to help protect our residents and give them peace of mind knowing their personal information is safe. I strongly encourage everyone who can to attend to take this simple step to safeguard you and your family from any sort of identity theft."

Representative Cabello emphasized the importance of securely disposing sensitive documents due to ongoing risks related to consumer fraud. "The risk to individuals’ personal and financial information has never been greater," said Cabello. "Documents containing sensitive details—such as Social Security numbers, financial records, and medical information—can easily be exploited if not properly disposed of. Participating in this free shredding event is a simple but important step residents can take to protect themselves from identity theft, financial loss, and long-term damage to their credit."

Cabello was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 90th House District in 2023, succeeding Tom Demmer.

For further details about the shred event, residents may contact Leader McCombie’s office at 815-291-8989.
