1. Principal Appreciation Week

This week, October 20–24, is Principal Appreciation Week, and we would like to take a moment to recognize and thank our incredible building leaders.

Our principals work tirelessly to create welcoming, safe, and supportive learning environments for every student, every day. They wear many hats — instructional leader, mentor, problem-solver, cheerleader, and community builder — and they do it all with passion and dedication.

On behalf of the Board of Education, we extend our sincere gratitude to our principals for their leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence. Their work makes a lasting impact not only on our schools, but on our entire community.

To our principals: thank you for all you do to support our students, staff, and families. We celebrate you this week and every week!

2. 2025School of Distinction - Belvidere High School

The Illinois Art Education Association is pleased to recognize Belvidere High School as a 2025 School of Distinction. Belvidere High School is one of five schools receiving this prestigious award.

This recognition celebrates schools with rigorous art, design, and media education programs. To earn the School of Distinction Award, Belvidere High School evidenced practices that directly enacted the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, the Illinois Fine Arts and Media Standards, and Social-Emotional Learning Priorities. For more on how the award aligns with these markers, please follow this link.

Participating in high-quality art, design, and media courses develops student creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills in valuable ways. Students in these programs gain social and emotional skills along with college, career, and citizenship readiness. Research indicates that schools with successful programs like that at Belvidere High School experience increased student attendance, engagement, and academic performance when compared with schools that don’t.

The IAEA is proud to honor Belvidere High School for its distinguished art, design, and media education programming and the significant opportunities this program offers students.

Belvidere High School received the following as part of this recognition:

∙ A digital banner for display on their school’s website

∙ A physical award presented at the IAEA Conference

∙ Recognition on the IAEA website

∙ A press release

The School of Distinction recognition extends from 2025 until 2027, at which time Belvidere High School can reapply for this recognition. Until that time, the IAEA is pleased to honor Belvidere High School for this prestigious achievement!

3. Success Network: Leadership Community Updates District 100 was highlighted in the Illinois Education & Career Success Network's Quarterly Newsletter. Check it out!

Boone County - Early College and Pathway Success in District 100

In the 2026 school year, 48% of Belvidere CUSD 100 students are enrolled in dual-credit courses, showcasing the incredible opportunities our students have to earn college credit and prepare for future success. The courses are offered in partnership with Rock Valley Community College and Highland Community College. In the 2025 school year, students earned a record 3,608 early college credits—the highest total in a single year.

The CUSD 100 team is also excited to celebrate success in its College and Career Pathway Endorsements. Last year, 13 students earned a Pathway Endorsement, and the district anticipates more than doubling that number this school year. To encourage students to pursue early college credits and industry credentials and to get an early start on working toward their career, District 100 offers a special incentive. Any student who earns a Pathway Endorsement and subsequently obtains a degree, certification, or licensure in the same field will be guaranteed an interview for any related District 100 position to which they apply.

These achievements reflect the hard work of students, staff, and community partners in preparing every student for success beyond high school.

4. Certified Professional Supervisor (CPS) - Michael Johns Illinois ASBO would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Michael Johns, for successfully completing the training program and passing the comprehensive exam to obtain certification as a Certified Professional Supervisor.

Illinois ASBO partners with the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) to provide a comprehensive certification program for the individuals responsible for Illinois public school facilities. The AFE CPS certification exemplifies that Michael has knowledge of the core competencies of managing personnel and departments within a facility.

Belvidere CUSD 100 will be served well by Michael's efforts and increased knowledge brought to your district. Congratulations to Michael for this personal growth and to Belvidere CUSD 100 for supporting continuing education and professional development.

J. Roll Call Action Items

1. Proclamation for American Education Week - November 17- 21, 2025

Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education.

The conventions of both organizations subsequently adopted resolutions of support for a national effort to raise public awareness of the importance of education. In 1921, the NEA Representative Assembly in Des Moines, Iowa, called for designation of one week each year to spotlight education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs."

The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938.

Other co-sponsors are the U.S. Department of Education and national organizations including the National PTA, the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Association of School

Administrators, the National School Boards Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the American School Counselor Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, the National School Public Relations Association, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving. (taken from nea.org) American Education Week Proclamation.pdf

The superintendent recommends the Board of Education approve the Proclamation for American Education Week.

3. Portrait of a Graduate Research Study Proposal Our current strategic plan, while foundational, includes a list of graduate traits that haven't been fully operationalized. To ensure our students are prepared for their futures, it's critical to develop and operationalize a Portrait of a Graduate (PoG). This PoG will build upon our existing strategic planning work and serve as a clear, compelling, and collaboratively developed vision of success for District 100. It will articulate the durable competencies our students need for their future lives and provide a student-focused base from which to ensure alignment across all district initiatives and serve as the guiding vision for our school district.

This Research Study Proposal and presentation outline the process the administration is recommending the school district follow to create its Portrait of a Graduate. Portrait of a Graduate Research Study Proposal

6. Red Ribbon Week

Next week, October 23–31, our schools will join communities across the nation in celebrating Red Ribbon Week — the largest and longest-running drug prevention campaign in the United States.

Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 in honor of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, and today it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of living healthy, safe, and drug-free lives. Each year, schools across the country participate through spirit days, classroom activities, and community events that promote positive choices and strong decision-making skills.

Here in District 100, our students and staff will take part in themed days, assemblies, and activities designed to build awareness and encourage drug-free lifestyles. This celebration not only unites our schools but also connects us with families and the larger community in a shared commitment to supporting the health and success of our young people.

We want to thank our principals, staff, and families for their efforts in

making Red Ribbon Week a meaningful and impactful experience for our students. Together, we are helping them develop the knowledge and confidence they need to make safe and healthy choices now and in the future.
