Cost of college went up for resident students at Rock Valley College

In-state tuition and fees rose 3.5 percent for 2017-18 at Rock Valley College, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $8,924 to attend the two-year public institution this year $300 more than the $8,624 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 71.6 percent more than residents this year, or $15,314. Their price tag was reduced 1.7 percent from $15,584 in 2016-17.

About 99 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. And about 1 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 49 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 318 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.43 million and 48 students took out student loans totaling more than $185,608.

Including all undergraduates, 2,811 students used grants or scholarships totaling $12.32 million. Another 472 took out $1.76 million in federal student loans.
