JUDSON UNIVERSITY: Judson Welcomes New Faculty Members for the 2018-2019 School Year

Judson University issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.

They are: David Amundson, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Director of Fabrication; Dr. Teesta Jain, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Russell W. Kinkade, Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology; Kristy Piebenga, Assistant Professor of Education; and Dr. Denise Purvis, Assistant Professor of Clinical Counseling.

David Amundson is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and the Director of Fabrication at Judson University. Prior to this role, he served 16 years as an adjunct instructor of Architecture and the Model Shop Director at Judson. As shop director, Amundson designed and built projects, was responsible for shop equipment and supplies, assisted students working in the shop and oversaw the student work staff in the shop. Previously, he worked as a staff architect with architecture firms in Illinois, Delaware, and North Carolina. He also served as chairman of the City of St. Charles Housing Commission for two years and as vice chair for 10 years. Amundson earned a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies and a master’s degree in Architecture with a concentration in Housing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is passionate about affordable housing and has devoted volunteer time across nearly his entire adult life to the issue, working through both local government and nongovernmental organization. In his free time, he likes designing and building furniture as well as working on his 1931 bungalow.

Dr. Teesta Jain is a visiting assistant professor of Chemistry. Dr. Jain has worked as a business analyst, clinical research manager and in business development. Her research work has included completing postdoctoral fellowships in cell biology and cancer research at Harvard Medical School and at the University of California Davis and the at Boston Biomedical Research Institute. Dr. Jain holds bachelor’s degrees in Computer Applications and in Microbiology from Indira Gandhi National Open University and Delhi University respectively, a master’s degree in Microbiology from Guru Nanak Dev University and a doctorate degree in Biochemistry from Louisiana State University.

Dr. Russell W. Kinkade, a clinical and consulting psychologist with more than 30 years of experience, is a visiting assistant professor of Psychology. Prior to this role, Dr. Kinkade served as an adjunct instructor, consulting psychologist and, for more than 13 years, as the executive vice president of Shepherds, a faith-based non-profit in Union Grove, Wis. He also has a private clinical and consulting practice with offices in Racine and Pewaukee, Wis. His clinical specialties include the Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT) of anxiety and mood disorders, personality disorders as well as an interest in spiritual-based counseling approaches. Born to missionary parents in Hong Kong, he has also served as associate and then senior pastor of Waukesha Bible Church for six years. Dr. Kinkade earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Cedarville University, a Graduate Certificate in Theology and Counseling from The Psychological Studies Institute (now Richmont Graduate School), a master’s degree in Education in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University, and a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology.

Kristy Piebenga is an assistant professor of Education. She is also a 2019 candidate in Judson’s Doctor of Education in Literacy program. Piebenga holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Trinity International University and two master’s degrees in Education and in Literacy from Judson. Piebenga has served as a professor in Judson’s undergraduate and graduate-level Education programs for four years and has served as a faculty member of Judson’s biannual A Day at Judson literacy conference this past year. She has also worked as a classroom elementary teacher at Westminster Christian School and Woodstock Christian School and has affiliations with various local and national reading and literacy councils. Her research interests include teacher ideology and literacy as social practice.

Dr. Denise Purvis, a licensed clinical professional counselor, nationally board certified counselor, and certified substance abuse counselor joins Judson as an assistant professor of Clinical Counseling within the Division of Professional Studies. Her background includes more than 20 years of experience working in the field of mental health as a counselor in private practice, program development within agencies, supervision roles, community agencies, employee assistance program provider, and as a substance abuse counselor in residential and outpatient settings. Dr. Purvis has served as an adjunct instructor with other universities. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Family and Child Studies, with a specialty in Marriage and Family Therapy, from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from Walden University. She is an active member of various local and national counseling associations.

Judson University holds a 9:1 student-to-teacher ratio in its classrooms, allowing students to have personal connections and mentoring relationships with their professors. Moreover, 87.9 percent of Judson's full-time and pro-rata teaching faculty hold the appropriate terminal degree.
