Democrat lawmakers have approved the largest budget in Illinois state history, despite the state collecting a record $54 billion in tax revenue. The new spending plan includes nearly $1 billion in additional tax hikes and a series of short-term budget maneuvers. Republican lawmakers express concern about what they describe as a serious spending problem in Springfield.
Over the past six years, government spending under Governor Pritzker has increased by nearly 40 percent. Meanwhile, families across Illinois face challenges as the cost of living rises.
During the recent spring legislative session, Democrat lawmakers proposed several tax ideas that could impact residents statewide. These included a $1.50 delivery tax on items such as groceries and baby formula, taxes on services like car repairs or haircuts, and a digital ad tax targeting small businesses. Although these proposals were not included in the final budget, Republicans caution that Democrats may still consider them.
State Senator Dave Syverson commented, "Instead of asking for more from taxpayers, Governor Pritzker and his Democrat allies need to get serious about responsible budgeting, living within their means and protecting taxpayers."
