Rockford Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.
On Monday, January 21, 2019, shortly before 4:00 p.m., patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to a shots fired call in the 700 block of Kent Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 15-year-old male victim lying in the street suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Based on the information available at this time, it is believed the victim was walking with a group of friends when they were confronted by an unknown number of suspects in a car. Shots were fired from the vehicle at the group, and the victim was struck and killed.
The identity of the victim is not being released pending family notification. Detectives from the Rockford Police Department are conducting a follow-up investigation.
