Prairie State Legal Services issued the following announcement on April 5.
Prairie State Legal Services is proud to announce it has received a $67,334.49 grant to continue the Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) with Crusader Community Health that integrates civil legal services with health care to address health-harming social needs and social inequities to improve residents’ health. The grant was awarded by the Dr. Louis and Violet Rubin Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Community Grants Program.
The MLP allows Crusader patients to access no-cost civil legal services for important legal issues such as: eviction defense, getting repairs made to apartments, expunging criminal records, obtaining orders of protection or divorce, preparing advanced directives, obtaining guardianship of a minor or disabled adult, fighting housing discrimination, dealing with problems with public benefits, filing for bankruptcy, fighting foreclosure, and more. Crusader patients can request a referral for legal help through Crusader staff at any Winnebago County location or contact Crusader Community Connections at 815-490-1680 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
An attorney will meet with clients at Crusader on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. A monthly expungement clinic will take place on the fourth Thursday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. at Crusader Community Connections at 1200 W. State St., Rockford. All individuals asking for legal help will be screened for eligibility for free legal services before talking to an attorney and there is no guarantee of representation.
