The 21 state tax and fee hikes that total $4.7 billion are a nightmare of Freddy Krueger proportions, according to a Republican state representative from District 68's Facebook post earlier this month.

"Unfortunately the nightmare has just started for the taxpayers," state Rep. John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) said in his July 1 Facebook post. "Twenty-one new taxes. Over $3 billion. How did your elected official vote? I was a HELL NO!"

Cabello's Facebook statement was posted above a meme entitled "Nightmare on Illinois St", which parodied the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series of horror movies.

The new or higher taxes and fees were placed on gas, vehicle registrations, parking, marijuana, gambling, online shopping and other items, purportedly to pay for infrastructure as part of the state's fiscal 2020 operating budget.

District 68 includes all or parts of Rockford, Machesney Park, Loves Park and Cherry Valley.
