SwedishAmerican Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 29.
SwedishAmerican is pleased to offer cancer patients a new scalp cooling treatment that prevents hair loss caused by certain chemotherapy drugs.
The SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center (3535 N. Bell School, Rockford) implemented the Paxman Scalp Cooling System this week. Paxman is a company based out of England that provides products and services to combat chemotherapy-induced hair loss. Previously, SwedishAmerican patients were referred to UW Health in Madison to undergo these kinds of treatments. They are not offered anywhere else in Rockford.
“We’re all very excited to bring this treatment option to our patients,” said Natalie Wilson, SwedishAmerican’s Director of Oncology Services. “One of the things we strive for is to stay on top of new technology and constantly improve our services. Our goal is to provide everything possible to make this experience better for patients.”
The scalp treatments are administered during patients’ chemotherapy sessions. Patients are fitted with a cap, which cools the scalp and reduces blood flow to hair follicles which may prevent or minimize hair loss. The treatment has a 50- to 70-percent success rate.
“I think it’s very important that we offer this to our patients,” said Dr. William Schulz, a cancer care provider for SwedishAmerican. “It’s part of taking care of the patient. Medically, if we can keep them from losing their hair, it helps with their well-being and gets them through the treatment easier.”
Paxman has been studying and experimenting with the scalp cooling treatment for more than 25 years. The therapy was approved two years ago by the FDA and is now expanding globally. For more information on the Paxman Scalp Cooling System, visit paxmanscalpcooling.com.
