Economic Impact Payment Scam-Prevention Tips:• The government will not call you asking for Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers.
• Scammers may emphasize words "stimulus check" or "stimulus payment." The official term is "economic impact payment."
• If you receive calls, emails or other communications claiming to be from the IRS or U.S. Treasury offering payment in exchange for personal information, do not respond.
• Be wary of anyone telling you that you can get an instant payment or an expedited process for an economic impact payment.
• Don't fall for scams that claim you need to pay money to receive your economic impact payment.
• Scammers may mail bogus checks, potentially with an amount other than stated by the IRS, and direct you to call or provide information online in order to cash it.
• Fraud involving payment of Federal taxes should be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
• Official IRS information about COVID-19 and economic impact payments can be found on the Coronavirus Tax Relief page on IRS.gov.
