As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and record numbers of people continue to be laid off and find themselves seeking unemployment benefits, a new partnership may help unemployed Illinois residents return to the workforce.

Illinois Work Net unveiled its online platform May 13.

"The state is trying to help people who are looking for work with those businesses that are hiring,” Bill Clow, business engagement director at the Greater Freeport Partnership, told WIFR. “We know that there are some businesses that are hiring right now despite all the craziness from the  pandemic."

Jessica Gonzales of The Workforce Connection said she believes the situation is trending toward virtual job fairs. She reports that The Workforce Connection has hosted several virtual job fairs and hiring events since the pandemic.

"So many employers that are in desperate need of qualified and good employees because their demand is increasing and so it's very important for the job seekers to still be able to have access to getting those jobs," Gonzales told WIFR.

Some of the industries hiring now include grocers, manufacturers and health care organizations.
