Mercy Rockford Health System issued the following announcement on Nov. 24.

Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside in Rockford recently earned re-designation as a Level III Perinatal Facility in affiliation with the Illinois Regionalized Perinatal Health Program by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDHP). As the Level III perinatal center, Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside provides extraordinary maternal and fetal care for families during routine and high-risk pregnancies. Currently, Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside is one of only 10 hospitals in Illinois, as well as the only hospital in the Rockford region, to have this designation.

The Northwest Illinois Perinatal Center is designated and recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as one of 10 Administrative Perinatal Centers (APC) in Illinois, and is housed at Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside. Illinois has a strong, notable perinatal regionalization system that has helped provide quality care to perinatal patients in Illinois since the perinatal regionalization system inception in 1976.

The Northwest Illinois Perinatal Center serves as a resource in providing quality maternal-fetal and neonatal care for 11 counties in the northwestern region of Illinois. The primary goal of the APC is encompassed in our mission statement: Administer and implement IDPH perinatal programs to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity through outreach education and quality initiatives to health care providers in Northwest Illinois. Quality improvement activities and education specific to the needs of the network hospitals and health departments in the region are provided to implement the programs of IDPH with the goal of improving the outcomes for the maternal and newborn population.

Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside in Rockford serves as the Level III institution for the Administrative Perinatal Center. As the Level III perinatal center, Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside provides the resource of highly qualified staff of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology and neonatal subspecialist physicians who provide care to women experiencing high-risk pregnancies, and for the newborns with high-risk special care needs.

The Level III Center and APC offers a range of services including:

Administration and implementation of IDPH perinatal health care programs

Accepts referrals and transports of mothers and/or newborns requiring high-risk, Level III care

Consultation services for professional colleagues in the region

Professional outreach education offerings for health care providers, nurses and perinatal staff

Act as a liaison between IDPH and the network hospitals and health departments in the region

Mercyhealth hosted a virtual site visit in August 2020. The visit provided an opportunity for discussion of our perinatal services and to highlight our commitment to providing quality care for perinatal patients of Illinois. The certification is valid for three consecutive years.
