City of Rockford, IL. issued the following announcement on Jan. 9.
We know it’s frustrating. It seems like you just finish clearing your driveway of snow, when a plow comes through and pushes some back onto your driveway.
Here’s why this happens - City crews and contractors use side discharge plows. As the plows move forward, snow moves along the blade from the left to the right. The discharge from the blade is deposited along the curb or in the grass boulevard on the city right of way. This discharge ends up leaving a relatively small amount of snow in driveway approaches along the route.
Here's what you can do – Shoveling a corner of the right of way free of snow in the area several feet before the driveway will help keep that same snow from being pushed into the driveway in a pile. Clearing an area large enough to hold the snow coming off the plow may help reduce the “second shovel.”
