The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced another round of funding for local governments, with $4 million being allocated to the Rockford area.

Projects that the funding can be used toward are bridge improvements, traffic signal upgrades, updated storm sewers and bike paths, sidewalk replacements and maintenance needs.

"This week, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced the fourth round of Rebuild Illinois funding for local governments is available and over $4 million is being provided to the Rockford area. This funding will help put people to work on local construction projects. Getting this money in place for projects within our community is more important now than ever, as we continue to recover from the pandemic," Sen. Steve Stadelman wrote in a Facebook post on May 13.

A total of $1.5 billion spread out in six installments is being invested over three years.

Stadelman is a long-time advocate for investing in Rockford-area infrastructure.

“This funding is an investment in the safety of everyone who uses our roads and highways on a daily basis,” Stadelman said on his website. “It also shows our commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and focusing funds toward communities that need it.”

Over $4 million is being provided to the Rockford area.

The Illinois Department of Transportations provides oversight to roads, railways, public transportation, and air. They carry the responsibility of building and maintaining public highways, regulating airports, and supervising passenger and freight railroad projects. The IDOT analyzes transportation options to see the effectiveness for its travelers, evaluate the infrastructure, and recommend improvements based on information from performance and demographics.

After taking care of the priorities, IDOT helps the community by providing transportation options that meet state and federal standards on safety and encourage economic growth in the community.
