Judson Welcomes New Faculty Members for the 2021-2022 School Year

Judson University issued the following announcement on Sept. 30

Judson University welcomes eight new faculty members to campus during the 2021-2022 academic year.

They are: Dan Hussey, Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture; Dr. Andressa Martinez, Assistant Professor of Architecture; Tim May, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music; Dr. Luis Fernando Nunez, Professor of Architecture; Dr. Edgardo Perez-Maldonado, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Architecture; Roderick (Roger) Simmons, Director of Diversity and Spiritual Development; Dr. Solomon (Sean) Wang, Assistant Professor of Psychology; Dr. Amy Warfel, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education. Dan Hussey, Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture, has been an adjunct professor in architecture at Judson since January of 2019. Prior to Judson, he spent the last 32 years building his private architectural firm, Hussey Architects Ltd. Dan also worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago. He received a bachelor’s of Architecture from Notre Dame and a master’s of Science in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University. Dan is passionate about promoting sustainability and traditional architecture, and advocates for study abroad for the students.

Dr. Andressa Martinez serves as an Assistant Professor of Architecture. She received two bachelor’s degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the School of Architecture at FAU/UFRJ - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She earned a master’s and a doctorate in Urban Design from PROURB/UFRJ. Her current research is focused on methodological design studies, digital design processes, and fabrication. She is also an active member of non-profit associations related to the use of computers in Architecture, such as SIGraDi, in South America, and as an annual reviewer for the European Conference (eCAADe).

Tim May serves as Assistant Professor of Music Technology in the Demoss Center of Worship in the Performing Arts. He received his bachelor’s in Music Business and Entrepreneurship in 2013 and his master’s in Organizational Leadership from Judson University in 2018. While at Judson, he has overseen the development of Dark Room Studios located in the lower level of Thompson Hall. For the past 15 years, he has followed his musical passions by serving in various local churches both in music and audio production.

Dr. Luis Fernando Nunez, Professor of Architecture, earned his master’s degree in Architectural Design in Mexico and graduated with honors. He also earned a PhD in Architecture at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and his doctoral thesis was published in 2007. He was a full-time professor at Monterrey Tec University Campus Querétaro, and served as Director of the Architecture Program, Director of the Department of Architecture and Dean of the School of Architecture, Art and Design of Monterrey Tec University. He has also taught in France at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Leading his own professional firm, he has carried out more than 30 architectural projects, some of them awarded nationally, including the building for the School of Architecture, Art and Design of Monterrey Tec, which got the LEED Platinum certification by the USGBC.

Dr. Edgardo Perez-Maldonado, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Architecture, completed a PhD in history at the Inter-American University Metropolitan Campus, concentrating on topics of urbanism, architecture, and culture. Additionally, he completed a master of Architecture at the Savannah College of Arts and Design. For several years, he trained as a professional designer working for architecture and urban design firms in San Juan, New York, and Savannah. Pérez-Maldonado has continued his work as a professor teaching design studios, research seminars, architectural history and theory, visual representation, and art history. He received the distinction of “Outstanding Professor Award” at the International School of Design and Architecture of the UAGM, and his creative work has received awards and mentions in Puerto Rico, the United States and Europe.

Roderick (Roger) Simmons, Director of Diversity and Spiritual Development and Assistant Professor, is the President/COO of Crossinculture, a consulting firm with extensive experience in providing Cultural Competency training for organizations desiring to enhance their cultural awareness levels. Roger earned his bachelor’s degree in Christian Religion and Philosophy: Biblical Studies in 1994 and his master’s degree in Intercultural Studies in 2016. He is an Adjunct Professor at Judson University, providing instruction to students in the area of Cultural Diversity. Roger has worked directly with public schools in the area of managing cultural diversity and has provided training in cultural awareness for several non-profit organizations in the Elgin area.

Dr. Solomon (Sean) Wang, Assistant Professor of Psychology, earned his PhD in Human Development and Family Science. He has published several academic journal articles, and worked at Pepperdine University, Loma Linda University, and Hope International University. In addition to teaching undergraduates, Sean has also taught master and doctoral level students in statistics, research methods, and program evaluation. Outside of class, Sean engages in martial arts, competitive ballroom dancing, culinary arts, playing fingerstyle guitar, rockhounding, real-estate investing, computer coding, and building his video game arcade.

Dr. Amy Warfel, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education, has taught various education courses at Judson University as an adjunct professor for the past seven years. She takes a research-based approach with practical application when teaching undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, she is passionate about teachers developing positive rapport with students and promoting literacy in the classroom.

Judson University holds a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio in its classrooms, allowing students to have personal connections and mentoring relationships with their professors. Moreover, 86 percent of Judson’s full-time and pro-rata teaching faculty hold the appropriate terminal degree.
