Rockford University issued the following announcement on Nov. 4
The Rockford University men's basketball team heads into the 2021-22 season with third-year head coach Jeremy Reigle and assistant coaches Chris Davis, Taylor Jones and Rufus Williams. The preseason rankings have the Regents projected to take 6th in conference, but look for them to make another push for the conference tournament this season. The squad has plenty of returners and a number of transfers looking to leave their mark on the program.
Looking Back
- Rockford posted a 9-5 record overall in a shortened season last year, going 6-2 in conference.
- The Regents hosted two games in the conference tournament, winning both. They came up short in the NACC championship game, losing 78-71 to Wisconsin Lutheran.
- Rockford's 6-2 conference record was the third time the Regents posted an above .500 conference record in the past 10 years of competition, showing great improvement.
- This year's squad sees a healthy number of both returners and newcomers that will try to make a similar conference tournament run again this year.
- Brandon Emerick is coming off a great season last year and is set to take over the scoring role for the Regents. He had 12.3 PPG, the team-high in assists with 4.2, and 4.1 rebounds. Emerick had a career game against Aurora in the conference tournament last season, scoring 34 points in 35 minutes of play and handing out 9 assists.
- DJ Bonds is another offensive threat for the Regents to continue to utilize this season. He had one of the highest shooting percentages on the team at 60.6 percent and averaged 10.4 points. Bonds had 21 points in the first game against Aurora last season.
- Micah Swanson will be a post threat once again this winter, cleaning up offensive rebounds with a second-highest 1.7 per game. Swanson also had the highest field goal percentage of the starters, making 64.6 percent of his attempts. Swanson scored 29 points and had 13 rebounds in back-to-back games against Dominican University last season.
- TJ Lacey will participate in his first year as a Regent, transferring in from Trinity Christian College. Lacey put up 10.8 points per game and 4 rebounds per game. He will be a contributor right away in this Regents offense.
- Zac Centers is a 6-1 guard transferring in from the University of Jamestown. He will be another exciting prospect as he steps into his role at Rockford.
- Charles Burnell is another transfer to watch. The Rockford native is ready to contribute coming into the 2021-22 season.
"We have a really nice mix of returners and newcomers that have meshed well together early on." Said Coach Reigle. "We have a group that will compete hard and play together as a team. It will be fun to get back to having fans in the stands this year."
