Regents Seal Tough Road Win at the Free Throw Line

3

Rockford University issued the following announcement on Dec. 16

The Rockford University women's basketball team (6-4) earned a hard-fought 53-49 road victory on Thursday evening over the Mount Mary University Blue Angels (0-10). The victory gave Rockford its fourth win in the last five meetings between the two schools and already its most wins in a single-season in five years. Rockford was able to overcome a difficult shooting night by dominating the glass and making more free throws than Mount Mary attempted. The Regents crushed the Blue Angles on the boards 50-34 and made 17 free throws compared to just nine makes for Mount Mary. Anaya Davis was also once again a difference maker on the floor. Davis recorded her seventh straight double-double, and eighth overall, with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals.

Regent Recap

  • Rockford jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead exactly three minutes into the game. Jocelyn Callahan jump-started the RU offense with a triple and Anaya Davis and Roshanda Stevens each hit a jumper of their own, to combine to score Rockford's seven points.
  • Mount Mary would eventually retake the lead and push it to as many as three points at 13-10, with 2:20 left in the first period.
  • However, Rockford made four free throws to close out the quarter and take a 14-13 lead heading into the second.
  • The two teams continued to battle back and forth throughout the second quarter, with neither team leading by more than three points at any time.
  • With Rockford holding a two-point lead and 1:28 left in the half, Mount Mary scored the final four points to take a 31-29 lead into the break.
  • The Blue Angels then scored four of the first five points in the third quarter to take a 35-30 advantage, the largest for either team thus far.
  • Fortunately, the Regents responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by a triple from Evelyn Abundes, to retake the lead at 36-35.
  • Abundes would hit another three-pointer later in the quarter, to give Rockford a 39-37 lead heading into the fourth.
  • Rockford was able to steadily build its lead up to as many as five points after Anaya Davis scored three straight, to give her team a 46-41 lead with 5:37 left in regulation.
  • However, things would get a bit dicey over the next few minutes, as Mount Mary scored the next five points to knot the game at 46-46 at the 4:11 mark.
  • With Rockford now clinging to a one-point lead and less than a minute left, the Regents would be sent to the free throw line on multiple occasions.
  • Fortunately, Anaya Davis, Naynay Clark and Roshanda Stevens would each make a free throw to help seal the 53-49 road win.
